Queen of Olives

Mixed Media & Fluid Copper Leaf on Canvas

24 x 48 (without frame)

2007

Queen of Olives originally arose from a pretty simple inspiration: my incredible love of this stony, briny, glorious little Mediterranean fruit (yes, olives are a type of fruit). In drawing on this gastronomical passion, I created a goddess-like figure similar to those found in the very ancient world, where it was believed in certain regions that numerous gods and goddesses "ruled" over even the simplest things (including, say, the olive tree). The giant copper tree emblazoned on our Queen's gown touches on the theme of the Tree of Life, which can be found in the myths and religions of many world cultures.
